6" Drywall Knife We don't know why this is called a knife, but that's what it is called in the trades. Whatever it is called, the 6" knife is very useful for applying the first coat of joint compound and dispensing compound from the container. The 6" knife is also useful in scraping off globs of joint compound after each coat is dried. These knives can be made of plastic, but the better ones are made from stainless steel. They can range in price from $0.50 for plastic to $7.00 for a good stainless steel one. The amount you intend on using this tool should dictate how much you want to spend. Cleanup for this tool is usually done by scraping as much of the leftover compound back into the container and washing the remainder off with warm water. Dry off the tool thoroughly to avoid rusting.
